1. Where is Ghaxaq?

Ghaxaq, one of Malta's oldest villages, is situated in the southern part of Malta. It is flanked by Gudja from the upper part and by Zejtun from the other part.It is 6km from Valletta - the capital city, and near the Malta International Airport. Population as at 31st March 1999 stood at approximately 4500, 51.3% are males while 48.7% are females.

2. Why Ghaxaq?

There exists two theories about the name of Ghaxaq. One is that this name originated from the surname of Axiaq,since our village was part of their feudal land; the other is that this name originated from the adjective of 'delight'.

Our village originated from the nearby village of Zejtun as from 1626.

4. What is the setup of Ghaxaq Local Council?

By virtue of the Local Councils Act (1993) Ghaxaq was one of 67 localities to have its own Local Council. The first election was held on Saturday, 22 nd January 1994. The Ghaxaq Local Council is the local government responsible for the upkeeping and maintenance of the locality. Its main offices are at 15, Labour Avenue. The elected branch of the council is made up of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and three Councillors whilst the executive branch is headed by the Executive Secretary together with one full time officer.
